The Re-Imagination of Nearly Everything
by Adam Kleinberg
If there's one thing the Digerati love more than tweeting about their SXSW presentations, Klout scores and Facebook stock price predictions, it's fawning over Kleiner Perkins partner Mary Meeker's annual presentation on the state of the digital industry.
Last month, after the usual collection of statistics on mobile penetration and internet usage, Mary got to the core of a mega-trend that is sweeping across society—the "Re-Imagination of Nearly Everything."
The trend pretty much speaks for itself. In the past several years, we've simply re-imagined nearly everything we do and this is leading to a deluge of opportunity and innovation that will continue to wash over us in years to come.
I couldn't edit her presentation (KPCB Internet Trends 2012), so skip to slide 29 to see the literally dozens of examples she uses to make her point—computing devices, how we communicate, get our news, draw, photograph, record stories, read magazines. Music, video, traffic, sound, sports, entertainment, tv, home improvement, taxis, coupons, restaurants, cash registers... the list goes on and on.
And this list isn't even complete. Just look at our client list:
- Our friends at Livescribe have re-imagined something as simple as a pen.
- Alibaba.com has re-imagined who you can do business with and brought the whole world to your desktop
- Salesforce is re-imagining corporate intranets with Chatter (just a few years after re-imagining software with the cloud)
- Peel has re-imagined how you find something to watch on TV
- And Apple.... well that's just too easy.
The sheer volume of examples she uses is breathtaking in the aggregate. Definitely check out the original presentation at KPCB Internet Trends 2012.
