On being an OMMA All-Star

Last week, I got a huge honor from the folks at MediaPost when I was named an OMMA Online Creative All-Star.

According to editor, Joe Mandese, this is like their Hall of Fame for digital marketers, so it was flattering and humbling to get this recognition.

Previous winners of this award over the past five years include people in the industry I have deep respect for from some of the best agencies in the country: Rei Inamoto from AKQA, Alan Schulman from Sapient, JooYong Park from Firstborn, Mike Geiger from JWT, Colleen DeCourcy from W+K, Nick Law from R/GA... like I said, humbling.

Which left me thinking, "what did I do to deserve this?"

First, I think the leader of a smaller agency like Traction receiving this award reflects a shift in the industry. In years past, winners had always come from much larger agencies. Today, it is broadly recognized that the best agencies are not the biggest. Great ideas come from great teams. Traction happens to have one of the best.

Which leads me to thought #2. It's all about the team. In my off-the-cuff, unplanned acceptance speech, I shared that all I had when we started Traction was a drive to do great work and an instinct to surround myself with amazing people. Those people are the reason I got this award and what's even more humbling is that they've chosen to be on this journey with me.

This week I was quoted in a story in Ad Age about the disgruntled customer who bought a Sponsored Tweet to complain about British Air. Apparently, social media superhero, Gary Vaynerchuk, read the quote and was quite disgruntled about what I had to say. So disgruntled, he created a video rant and blog post about it.
